EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
