Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor
In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
